A day to remember
On day three, we once again woke up far earlier than one might think desirable on vacation. I guess we’re gluttons for punishment. Our day started with a Lyft ride to Hanauma Bay, and let me tell you, it was anything but uneventful. Our Lyft driver decided that the cones blocking the parking lot entrance were merely suggestions and plowed right over them in an attempt to drop us off. The security guard running the show was less than amused, but our driver remained completely unfazed. Honestly, it was kind of hilarious.
Thanks to Pure Aloha Adventures, we didn’t need to worry about the reservation system. Our guide, Nyle, was a perfect 100/10. She handled all the logistics, got our tickets, and whisked us past the line like VIPs. We still had to sit through the mandatory safety video and briefing, but soon enough, we were on the beach and ready to snorkel.
Nyle was incredible—she knew all the best spots and kept the experience safe and fun for everyone. Our group was small: just the two of us, a father, and his two kids. The children were inexperienced snorkelers and got cold quickly, but Nyle managed to make it enjoyable for all of us. We saw so many fish, an eel, and even a turtle (which only confirmed we should have skipped Turtle Cove). Though we only snorkeled for a bit over an hour, it was the perfect amount of time. We could have stayed longer, but the siren call of a nap was too tempting to resist.

After returning to the hotel, we promptly passed out. I woke up first and decided to explore the Hilton Hawaiian Village while my husband caught up on his sleep. During my wanderings, I stumbled upon a shop offering permanent bracelets. I got one with my son’s birthstone, and it was such a fun and meaningful keepsake!
Once Patrick was up and ready, we grabbed a Lyft to Diamond Head for a hike. I was apprehensive about this—thanks to the reviews, I knew stairs were involved, and lots of them. Patrick, on the other hand, was excited since he’d missed this hike on his first trip to Hawaii.
The trail is well-maintained, as expected for such a popular spot. Even at 2 p.m., it was warm but manageable. The view at the top? Absolutely worth it—unlike the lighthouse trail we tackled earlier in the week. That said, it wasn’t my favorite hike. It’s more of a steady walk up a paved mountain trail with some uneven terrain here and there. Exactly what I expected, though, so no complaints.

After Diamond Head, we opted for a relaxed evening with dinner delivered to our room, followed by indulgent hot baths before calling it a night. While this recap may seem brief, don’t let it fool you—this day was amazing. WHEN we return to Oahu, Hanauma Bay will absolutely be on the itinerary again, and I’m crossing my fingers that Nyle can guide us once more!
